A general framework for error analysis in measurement-based GIS Part 4: Error analysis in length and area measurements

چکیده
This paper is Part 4 of our four-part series of paper on the development of a general framework for error analysis in measurement-based geographic information systems (MBGIS). In this paper, we discuss the error analysis problems in length and area measurements under measurement error (ME) of the defining points. In line with the basic ME model constructed in Part 1 of this series, we formulate the ME models for length and area measurements. For length measurement and perimeter measurement, the approximate laws of error propagation are derived. For area measurement, the exact laws of error propagation are obtained under various conditions. An important result is that area measurement is distributed as a linear combination of independent noncentral chi-square variables when the joint ME vectors of vertices coordinates are normal. In addition, we also give a necessary and sufficient condition under which the area measurement estimator is unbiased. As a comparison, the approximate law of error propagation ion area measurement is also considered and its approximation is substantiated by numerical experiments.

A general framework for error analysis in measurement-based GIS Part 1: The basic measurement-error model and related concepts
This is the first part of our four-part series of papers which proposes a general framework for error analysis in measurement-based geographical information systems (MBGIS). The purpose of the series is to investigate the fundamental issues involved in measurement error (ME) analysis in MBGIS, and to provide a unified and effective treatment of errors and their propagations in various interrela...
متن کاملIranian TEFL Graduates’ Conceptions of Measurement Error in Research: A Genealogical Narrative Inquiry
The aim of this study is to investigate Iranian TEFL graduates’ conception of measurement error in research. Adopting a sequential explanatory multi-method strategy (Borg, 2009), the researchers analyzed causal and temporal relations in the research narratives elicited from 30 TEFL graduates. Gee’s (1986) framework for identifying narrative discourse units (lines, stanzas, and episodes) was ado...
متن کاملHuman Error Assessment in City Gate Stations of Isfahan Natural Gas Company Using the System for Predictive Error Analysis and Reduction Framework
Introduction: Human factor analysis has been identified as the most common cause of accidents in natural gas transportation and distribution facilities. The occurrence of accidents at these systems, especially gas reduction stations located in residential and industrial areas, has had catastrophic consequences. Therefore, this study aimed at analyzing critical tasks and human error assessment u...
متن کاملA general framework for error analysis in measurement-based GIS Part 3: Error analysis in intersections and overlays
This paper is Part 3 of our four-part research series on the development of a general framework for error analysis in measurement-based geographic information systems (MBGIS). In this paper, we study the characteristics of error structures in intersections and polygon overlays. When locations of the endpoints of two line segments are in errors, we analyze errors of the intersection point and ob...
متن کاملMeasurement-based Gis
GIS designs have evolved over the past 30 years, and once adopted a design tends to persist as a legacy despite progress in fundamental research. A feature of most GIS designs is the representation of position by derived coordinates, rather than by original measurements. In such coordinate-based GIS it is impossible to apply traditional error analysis, or to estimate uncertainties in derived pr...
